Director's Welcome

Program Director's Welcome

Our ID fellowship has been in place since 1960, almost three decades before the official designation in 1987!  This outstanding clinical program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our program combines clinical and research activities into a two-year curriculum, leading to certification in Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)

The fellowship consists of 12 months of inpatient service and 12 months of research, with a half-day continuity clinic per week during the fellowship. Rounding months are commonly in blocks of 1 to 4 months duration, although this arrangement can be modified to suite the career objectives of the fellow if there is an interest in bench research.

Our division provides infectious diseases expertise in four hospitals and five clinics all located on one Detroit campus. Our collaborative teams include a variety of trainees and clinical pharmacists.

We have the largest urban safety net hospital system in the state, proudly accepting underinsured patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We have the most MDR gram negatives in the state and are the only fellowship in Michigan with a dedicated STI and TB clinic. Our fellows also get extensive experience in bone marrow transplant, HIV infection, Veteran care, and more.

We are excited to customize your fellowship clinical and research experience to reach your career objectives. We invite you to see what distinguishes us from other top programs and explore the opportunities that Wayne State and the Detroit Medical Center can provide!
